In an increasingly interconnected and industrialized world, the importance of Corrosion Science, Mitigation, and Technology has grown exponentially. Corrosion not only compromises public safety and infrastructure but also impacts manufacturing efficiency and product quality across sectors.

As highlighted in NACE’s "IMPACT" report, the global cost of corrosion is estimated at a staggering USD 2.5 trillion—amounting to 3.4% of the GDP of industrialized countries and approximately 4.2% of India’s GDP. However, with strategic management and effective corrosion control measures, these costs can be reduced by 25–40%, emphasizing the need for urgent and sustained action.

Confederation of Indian Industry recognized the critical economic and industrial implications of Corrosion and with the support of NITI Aayog launched a National Mission on War Against Corrosion. To drive this mission forward, the Confederation of Indian Industry – Corrosion Management Division (CII – CMD) supported by Jindal Stainless Limited has been established. CII – CMD is led by Dr. U. Kamachi Mudali, Vice Chancellor of Homi Bhabha National Institute, as Chairman, and Mr. Abhyuday Jindal, Managing Director, of Jindal Stainless Limited, as Co-Chairman. A diverse set of stakeholders have been brought together to spearhead efforts aimed at Corrosion Management & Mitigation across all critical sectors.

CII – CMD is working with the Industry and all key stakeholders to formulate a Draft National Policy on Corrosion Control & Management.

CII – CMD offers specialized Corrosion Assessment & Audit Services aimed at helping industries identify, evaluate, and mitigate corrosion-related risks. These services are designed to support businesses across sectors in enhancing asset integrity, improving operational reliability, ensuring safety, and reducing maintenance and replacement costs. The assessments are conducted by qualified experts using industry best practices and advanced diagnostic tools to detect the presence, extent, and potential impact of corrosion. Based on the findings, a comprehensive report is provided with actionable recommendations for corrosion control, preventive maintenance, and long-term sustainability.

CII – CMD and IIT Ropar joined hands in the year 2022 and initiated a Post Graduate Professional Development Programme in Corrosion Management & Technology which has been running successfully since then. Course Faculty comprises domain experts from Industry and Professors from institutes of eminence like IIT Ropar, IIT Mumbai, IIT Madras, etc.

A host of training programs and workshops on important topics like Paints & Coatings, Design Against Corrosion, Advanced Materials, and Corrosion Issues during Hydrogen Storage and Transport, etc. are being organized at regular intervals for the benefit of the industry.

Under the aegis of Dr Baldev Raj Memorial Lecture Series, every month CII – CMD picks up one industry sector and organizes a focused session to address corrosion-related issues in that sector. This initiative has been running very successfully since 2022.

With an objective to recognize the efforts put in by the industry in the fight against corrosion, CII – CMD has initiated the annual National Corrosion Management Practices – Competition & Awards. Participating companies are assessed by an eminent jury comprising professionals from Academia, PSUs, and Industry. 

Seminars & conferences are a great platform for learning by sharing best practices, deliberations on policies, etc. CII - CMD institutionalized an International Conference on Corrosion Technology & Management (CORTEM). The conference is organized in Technical Collaboration with the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) which is the largest global community for corrosion and coatings expertise. Distinguished speakers & experts from different parts of the globe join this unique confluence and share their perspectives during the Conference.
